Festivus Market Has Good (Social) Values

The December market, held by the folks who founded and run the Crescent City Farmers Market, is back again this year and will feature fair trade, skilled services, handmade gifts, and recycled and ecological wares for its 5th year.

Its goal once again is to provide the perfect relief from the loneliness of on-line shopping, a fun and relaxing experience and to avoid the futility of trawling suburban lots searching for a space to park.

On the first 3 Sundays in December from 12 noon to 4 pm (December 2, 9, 16), the Festivus Market offers the best of the region’s handcrafted artwork, highlighting those vendors who follow fair trade methods, believe in ecological practices and share the belief in skilled customer service and skills.

All types of juried products will be available at each Sunday Market, among which can be found: handsewn books, books by local authors, pottery, clocks, patches, original jewelry, hand-blown or torchworked glass, funky night-lights, holiday ornaments, local musicians cds, homemade paper cards, paintings, photographs, vintage aprons, New Orleans ephemera, recycled bicycles, scooter stuff, hand-made clothing, knitted scarves, gloves and hats, natural oils and lotions, handsewn stuffed animals, soaps, candles, magnets, collages, hand-sewn clothes, shawls, debris art, New Orleans themed art, local citrus bags, wreaths, cocktails and hot food.

And, for your enjoyment while shopping, the Office of Homeland Serenity will be there to soothe, help and take the hassle out of shopping. Including free massages, non-profit giftwrapping station, the infamous grievance pole, free roaming flattery-wielding volunteers, and regifting station, the OHS is a one stop calming center.

“It is our firm belief that shopping among friends in a lively, neighborhood open air space is the best way to take the hassle out of holiday shopping. What is more fun that wending your way through 45 local artisans booths with a cocktail in one hand and a flattery fortune in the other, just having had a massage and heard some live music?” marketumbrella.org Manager of Markets, Erin Eastern asks. “Our shoppers spend hours meeting friends, chatting, eating and getting their shopping and giftwrapping done while smiling the whole time.”

The Sunday Festivus Market opens at 12 noon and closes at 4 pm on December 2nd, 9th, and 16th. Located at 700 Magazine Street, it is open the first three Sundays in December, rain or shine. In case of rain, it is held in the attached garage at 700 Magazine. This event is free and open to the public. For more information, call (504) 495-1459 or the office at 504-861-5898.
