Signs of recovery

Friday, November 23, 2007

—The Po-Boy Preservation Festival on Oak Street Sunday was a huge success. Some of the po-boy booths ran out of sandwiches by 4 p.m., and there were no festival T-shirts left to buy. The crowd was so thick that it was hard to walk from one end of Oak to the other.

— Police officers in New Orleans’ 5th District moved out of FEMA trailers and into the old Universal Furniture store on St. Claude Avenue. These are still temporary quarters but a big improvement over a trailer.

— Louisiana is on track for a record year in film productions. To date, 51 films are in production in the state, which is more than twice the number of productions in 2006.

— Robert Fresh Market reopened as the first supermarket to operate in Lakeview since the 17th Street Canal floodwalls fell apart and inundated the neighborhood more than two years ago.

— Work has begun to repair the roofs at Behrman Gymnasium and at the Brechtel Park Golf Course club house, which were damaged by Katrina. Both facilities are in Algiers.

— Large crowds lined up for tickets to “The Laramie Project” at Loyola University.
